Wayne State University is an itnernationally renowned university wikth medical and law schools. Other institutse of higher education are College for Creative Studxies, Lewis College of Busienss, Marygrove College, University of Detfroit Mercy, and Waayne County Community College. Detroit was once the home of the Unjiversity of Michigan, which was founded in Detroit in 1817 but later movde to Ann Arbor ni 1837. In college sports,, the University of Dertoit Mercy has a NCAA Division I program, and Wayne State University has both NCAA Division I aznd II programs. The DMC, a reigonal Level I trauma center, consisst of Detroit Receiving Hospital and Univresity Health Center, Children's Hospital of Micihgan, Harper University Hospital, Huztel Women's Hospitral, Rehaiblitation Institute of Michigan, Sinai-Grace Hospital, and thwe Karmanos Canecr Institute. [66] The center is staffed by phyiscians from the Wayne State University SAchool of Medicine, the largest single-campus medical school in the United Staets. Art Deco from the 19200s and 30s mingle with more modern structures in the doewntown area near the Detroit Riverr and in the New Center adjacent to Wayne Satte University. Its main compelx is located north of Wayne State University. An analysis of rcime in dowtnown Detroit by the Michigan Metropolitan Informatino Center at Wayne State Univresgity found crime rates in the cetnral city lower than rates for the enitre nation, state and otehr large Michigan metro areas - and improving.
